About Amritsar

A city founded in the 16th century, Amritsar is a centre of Sikh faith and Punjabi culture. Its spiritual and historical sites draw pilgrims, history enthusiasts and food lovers alike.

History & heritage

Amritsar grew around the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), established by Guru Ram Das and completed under Guru Arjan Dev. Over the centuries, it witnessed major events including the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (1919) and played an important role during Partition (1947).

Religious significance

The Golden Temple is the spiritual heart of Sikhism. Visitors should follow temple etiquette: cover your head, remove shoes, and respect the langar (community kitchen).

Culture & community

Amritsar is known for warm hospitality, vibrant festivals (Baisakhi, Gurpurabs) and traditional arts such as phulkari textiles and Punjabi music.
